Yeaaah, I'm reviewing The Novels of The Twelve Houses series by Sharon Shinn. Because I felt like it. Okay...to start off, let me introduce the book/series.
It's a Fantasy/Romance series, a new relationship developing in every book, along with plenty of plot-twists and stunning revelations along the way. Oh, and some humor thrown in. What more do you want in a book?
Anyway, on with the reviews...
1: Mystic & Rider
Pros:
• You are introduced to a beautiful and charming world called Gillengaria that has Twelve noble Houses
• Two of the most powerful people in the land fall in love so quietly you would miss it had you not been paying attention
• A wonderful cast of characters, and an extremely touching story of friendship as it's put to the test.
Cons:
• The first two chapters are in the same scene. I felt like they could've at least let the two 'guys' fight and end up outside or something.
• Senneth was drunk. I mean COME ON, you can't make a powerful woman like Senneth become weak to alcohol!
• Tayse is a huge SOB in the first 4-5 chapters. Which is bad.
Overall:
I love this book. It has been to be one of my favorites of Sharon Shinn's novels, right up there with Archangel. I DEFINITELY recommend it to anyone who loves Fantasy and Fantasy/Romance.
P.S: I swear I would've chucked the book if Senneth and Tayse didn't finally get together at the end.
2: The Thirteenth House
Pros:
• Senneth/Tayse relationship developed. *squeeage*
• Story focused on Kirra and all her hilariousness.
Cons:
• Kirra fell in love with a married man (Lord Romar Brendyn), that was to become regent in a few weeks.
• She became so selfish because she wanted this guy, very unlike Kirra.
• Not enough Senneth/Tayse, damn it! I barely saw them in the same chapter.
• The unbreakable relationship of Kirra/Donnal was 'shattered' till the end of the book, where she attempted to regain her one true friend and companion back.
Overall:
Not a book I thoroughly enjoy, although it did keep me coming back for more. I couldn't put it down (But then again I'm like that with every book). Mystics are once again prejudiced in this book, which completely annoys me. Like TOS and half elves, so to speak. I would still recommend this book, though. Just don't get too angry with Kirra in the middle to the end of the book, mkay?
3: Dark Moon Defender
Pros:
• Major Senneth/Tayse in this book. And they got married! OMFGYESTHANKGAWDx100
• Always good to see Cammon brightening up someone's day.
• Kirra & Donnal have settled their argument, and are back together as everlasting companions
And Senneth & Tayse got married!
Cons:
• Good lord, where do I begin? The story is focused on Justin and this damn girl Ellynor most of the time.
• Ellynor is a damn insecure idiot who is so frail and helpless, she should just stay with the damn Lumanen Convent. Who the hell wants to save her?
• Not enough interaction between the main party.
• I need to kill Ellynor. She just falsely assumes that Kirra loves Justin, and acts like a bitch towards her AND Senneth because she fears that EVERYONE IS OUT TO TAKE JUSTIN FROM HER. OH NOES.
• Justin is so bloody blinded by love that he doesn't even listen to Tayse, his CAPTAIN. Or anyone else, for that matter.
• Ellynor is a stubborn moron that does not want to listen to the plan they have, and keeps arguing with Kirra about escaping, because Justin had to be the decoy. ("I'm safe! I'm out! Let's go back for Justin! *gets shot by me 50 times in the head*)
• Basically, Ellynor was the damn problem. She FULLY annoyed me, and was so happy to hear that both Senneth and Kirra had someone they loved, because 'it was good that there was basically no more competition for Justin'. *throws a grenade at her*
Overall:
It's alright, I guess. The Senneth/Tayse in this book would drive me to keeping it, otherwise it'd be going to the secondhand bookstore by now. I do not recommend this book unless you have read the first two, or at least the first. And if you do get to read it, just slaughter Ellynor for me, okay?
To round everything up, this series is not to be missed. I guarantee a delightful read in almost
every book. So go dig through the secondhand bookstores now! They have Mystic & Rider at the Suntec City branch, if you're interested. And that's my favorite book out of the entire series. So go grab it, why the heck are you still sitting down? (just kidding)
